Week 10 Story: Father-in-law to Be

Image
There was a man who was known for playing tricks on all those he could. His favorite targets were his daughter's boyfriends. His daughter, Clara, had had many boyfriends, and lost most of them because they could not stand her father for any length of time. One day, she met a man who could equal her father's wit, and introduced the two. "Dad, this is my boyfriend Steve." "Hey Steve, my name is Walter. Would you want to go on a fishing trip with me?" "Glad to meet you Walter, I'd love to!" The pair agreed to leave in the morning. Clara warned Steve that her father often liked to trick her boyfriends, and to be on his guard. With this advice on his mind, Steve left with Walter to go fishing. The two traveled quite some ways and needed to stay the night at a hotel before they could begin fishing the next day. As they lay down to sleep, Walter said,"Nobody I've gone fishing with ever gets to take a picture with their catch because their...

Reading Notes: Native American Hero Tales Part B

These stories often involve some very gruesome things. But the author brushes over them like they're not important, and they tend to not be as all the people come back to life anyway. Then the kids do literally everything they are told not to do. doesn't matter who said it, they will do the opposite. At some point you have to wonder why the dad keeps telling them places to not go. maybe if he told them not to stay in the tipi all day, their problems would stop occurring. Then there were anal rape snakes. That was not a series of words I ever thought I would or ever wanted to say, but here we are. I'm not sure why we keep trusting people who have proven themselves to be murderers, but that's a common theme among these stories. The main character once again lies to basically everyone he meets, but is still treated like the good guy. Everyone tries to cheat in all these stories. Good times. Reading Notes: Native American Hero Tales Part A

This story has a lot of weird parts. For one, everyone knows that this uncle is killing children and are apparently completely okay with it. Then the son that lives decides to expose himself in public just for fun, which of course the uncle sees. So now we have a murderous pedophile and the parents decide they have to let him be alone with their son. Repeatedly. The way the child escapes is equally nonsensical, but at least they were creative. I was a bit unclear with how old the kid was, because as soon as he was found in his box, he got married. I had pictured him being younger, but what do I know? The grouse is completely in the wrong. He does no work, gets fed out of the kindness of others, and still harbors grudges against those keeping him alive. He thanks them for their help by essentially condeming them to death with magic. One idiot actually kills himself becuase he couldn't tell the difference between sand and seaweed, so he deserved it. They end up fighting for their li...

Week 9 Story: Executive Partner

Image
The Destroyer was the best wrestler to enter the pro scene, as was foretold by the script. Every time he stepped int he Right, nobody left until he had rendered his opponent unconscious. To keep it real, nobody felt it necessary to tell him that everything was scripted. All of his success had gotten to his head, and he started wanting more from the league. "I've never lost a match," said the Destroyer. "I want to have an official coronation as king of this league!" The owners of the league decided it was time for him to lose, hoping it would lower his ego and make things easier for everyone involved. They set The Destroyer against increasingly difficult opponents, each time telling them that they were to actually fight him and go for the win. The Destroyer lived up to his name in every bout. After many weeks of trying and failing to dismount him from his self proclaimed throne, one of interns lobbied an idea to the board of directors. "What if you promo...

Reading Notes: the Monkey King Sun Wu Kung Part B

Image
Second chances are given out willy-nilly in these stories aren't they? What about the previous adventures of Sun Wu Kung makes anyone think that he will be able to control himself for any extended period of time? Dude's not even grateful to Evening Star for sticking up for him. Wow, he didn't stay very long or appreciate the gift he had been given? Who could've seen that coming? What's the best way to deal with this guy? Give him what he wants and not control him at all? What a good idea, I'm promoting whoever had that idea. A depiction of Sun Wu Kung riding his clouds. Reading Notes: The Monkey King Sun Wu Kung Part A

I like the way this story starts out. I am a bit confused as to how other apes came to be, but other than that, off to a good start. Eventaully the king figured out he would die, and this made him sad. Unlike most of us, though, he's part magical, so he may yet become immortal. He sets out to achieve that, doesn't succeed for a while, and decides the only option is to set out to sea on a raft. If I've learned anything from Sinbad it's that he will survive his voyage and become better for it. Logic. He of course meets a string of people who will lead him to untold riches, and then they get mad at him for acting how he's always acted without ever being told to do anything else. Logic strikes again. The king had made no secret that he wanted to become immortal, but this "all knowing" Discerner was surprised when he didn't want to learn something that wouldn't further this goal. Then some bull secret code messaging occurs and the story continues. Lots ...

Week 8 Progress

Image
I am pleased with my progress in the class so far. At the time of writing this post, I have enough points to not do anything for the rest of this week and still be on track for an A. I have missed one major assignment, a storytelling in week 3, but have otherwise held a consistent schedule that I am pleased with. I had this as my phone background for a while. When there is a seemingly impossible task, its best to get started. Link

Week 8 Comments and Feedback

Image
I have enjoyed the feedback I have gotten, both from the professor and from other students. They have thought about and looked at my writing in ways that I never would have thought of. Having so many additional eyes focused on what I'm doing really helps me to improve and I appreciate it very much. I have also liked getting to be that voice to other people. In general, I have found it most helpful to be positive as I point out ways that their writing could be improved, but that may just be because that's what works best for me. I look forward to getting to continue both of these trends as the class continues. I chose this picture because of how done the cat in the back looks. Link

Week 8 Reading and Writing

Image
In general, I have been enjoying the reading notes and writing assignments. I think the Voyages of Sinbad have been my favorite readings so far, even though I rag on them pretty hard in my notes. My current favorite writing assignment is the one I have revised in my portfolio, but I am excited about the newest one that I haven't gotten to revise yet. I think I can make it into somethinig special over a couple weeks of looking at it and changing it piece by piece. My biggest accomplishment in the class, I think, is the sarcasm I have been able to spread throughout various assignments. I enjoy getting to put in attitude while still completing the assignments. I am looking forward to continuing the class and getting to work on my writing ability. This is the picture from my story on my portfolio, Pym's Gal. Picture Link

Wikipedia Trails: From Yamato to Polytheism

Image
I wanted to learn  more about one of the heroes in the reading, Yamato Takeru . I learned that he has been compared to the legend of King Arthur in many ways. I then learned that King Arthur may be based on a half-forgotten Celtic deity , which I obviously wanted to know more about. From there, I learned that the Celtics believed in multiple gods, or that they practiced polytheism . A statue of King Arthur.

I used the website befunky.com to make my collage. It also houses a collection of images to use, which I searched for drums and found these.

Week 7 Storytelling - The Labors of Yamato: The Rescue of the Princess

Image
I have added this story to my portfolio. I really hate taking baths. Surely there has to be an easier way to clean ourselves than to make me walk all the way out to this remote little bay. Then again, who am I to question the traditions that have been so for as long as anyone can remember. I'm sure my ancestor, Amaterasu, knew of better ways to bathe, but I don't get to talk to them, so here we go again. Now that I've cleaned up, this wasn't such a bad idea. I needed a little me time, so I'm going to enjoy this as much as I can. I'm going to sit on this rock for a while and just enjoy the sun. Hey, who's that in the water over there? That looks like a mermaid! I've never met a mermaid before, I'm going to go introduce myself. Oh shoot, I scared her. Wait! No! Come back! I just wanted to say hi. Darn it, maybe I can find where she swam off to. There's got to be a cave entrance around here somewhere. Darn, I couldn't find anything. I have...
